What is a direct-drive spin motor?

A direct-drive spin motor is the motor on an AMAT ion implanter end station responsible for rotating the wafer at speed during high-current implant. It couples directly to the wheel, without a gearbox stage, and depends on a resolver for accurate position feedback and ferrofluidic seals to hold vacuum integrity while it turns.

Resolver verification — R1, sine, cosine and thermistor measurements, with position confirmed live using an Analog Devices RDC evaluation platform

Rotational testing — free-rotation, vibration and acoustic noise checks to confirm the motor runs cleanly

Dynamometer rig testing — loaded testing at maximum RPM, with phase-to-ground input voltage verified on our dedicated dyno rig

Vacuum and helium leak integrity — extended vacuum hold with helium leak detection to confirm seal performance

Cooling system checks — water fittings inspection and leak verification

Testing is carried out using our custom in-house dynamometer rig, which allows the spin motor to be operated at maximum RPM using the Motech MP80 Controller while a secondary motor applies load to simulate an implanter wheel. Motors are run under realistic operating conditions and must pass this loaded test alongside the high-vacuum leak check before sign-off.
